When Oud Wood appeared in 2007, agarwood was still a connoisseur's obsession in the West; this composition, created for Tom Ford by perfumer Richard Herpin, made it conversational. Cardamom and a peppery rosewood open the door, and the oud that follows is sanded utterly smooth — no medicine, no barnyard, just cool, grey-brown wood wrapped in sandalwood and vetiver. Tonka and amber lend the drydown a discreet sweetness, like warmth coming off cashmere. It sits close to the skin and murmurs rather than announces.
